Mateo (peak)

Nevado Mateo is the fifth peak of the Contrahierbas Massif, located in the Cordillera Blanca, part of the Peruvian Andes. It lies on the border of the provinces of Asunción and Carhuaz, reaching a maximum elevation of 5,150 meters above sea level, making it one of the lowest peaks in the Cordillera Blanca.

The peak is frequently climbed due to its easy access and low altitude. However, due to the constant accidents with fatalities resulting from out-of-season expeditions during winter, it is recommended that the ascent only be undertaken during the Andean summer season, between June and September.
