Nevado Mateo was probably the most challenging and surprising place during our days in Huaraz. It is a technically moderate climb that reaches 5,150 meters in altitude, the highest point we achieved.
Tour price: Approximately $80 USD. It includes transportation, equipment, and the guide. An additional 30 soles (approx. 7 USD) is paid to enter the Huascarán National Park.
Tour contact: +51 943081066 with Eric Raul Albino Lliuya. You can also coordinate at your lodging or through travel agencies located at 475 Luzuriaga Avenue, Second Floor.
Comfortable clothing for cold and rain. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a backpack or bag to carry your belongings, water (preferably in a reusable bottle), snacks, and a light breakfast before starting the ascent.
We climbed the peak on our last day to have more time for acclimatization in Huaraz. It is necessary to coordinate the day before to try on the boot size for the climb; special equipment is required, which the tour company provides. Each person carries their own equipment in their backpack. Additionally, each guide leads a group of 3 to 4 people.
The hike takes approximately one hour (depending on the group’s pace) along a fairly steep and technical path. This section can be done in the same footwear you normally use for hiking, but good grip is essential as it’s not an easy climb. You reach the edge of the snow-covered mountain, where you need to change your footwear, put on your crampons, and have your ice axe ready. This is one of the most exciting parts; everything is new. All the equipment was in our Monteverde backpacks. The guide gave instructions for the ascent, set up the rope, and we began climbing the ice.
The team was quite fast, so after 22 intense minutes of intense physical and mental effort, we reached the summit of the snow-capped mountain. It was one of the most exciting moments of the entire trip to Peru (if not the most exciting).
Everything surrounding this place made this moment very special, and it made you want to stop time. It’s difficult to explain what you feel up there—a profound gratitude for life. We stayed up there for a while, contemplating everything surrounding Mount Mateo, and then we began our descent, with the feeling that we had experienced something beautiful.
