At the foothills of the imposing Huascarán snow-capped mountain, 58 kilometers north of Huaraz (approximately a 25-minute drive), lies the city of Yungay (2,458 m).
Etymologically, its name comes from the word “Yunga,” which means warm. This city was completely rebuilt after the 1970 earthquake and today serves as a large memorial site.
The old city of Yungay is located just 1.5 km from the new city. It is now a modern and peaceful city, and also the starting point for visiting the Llanganuco Lagoons, which are 25 km away.

The Cordillera Blanca is characterized by clear, sunny days during the dry season.

Although the nights are clear, they are also usually cold, even colder than cloudy nights.

During the dry season, also known as the Andean summer, rain can sometimes occur during the day and night.

4What are the best dates to visit the Chinancocha & Orconcocha Lagoons?

For a visit to Laguna Parón, it is best to go between April and September. During this period, it is the dry season, and while there may be some rain, it will be minimal. Generally, the hike is suitable for children; however, for seniors, we recommend contacting us so we can adapt the tour to their needs. Transportation goes directly to the lagoon, as the tour is very easy.

6How difficult is the tour to the Chinancocha & Orconcocha Lagoons?

It’s very easy. It’s suitable for everyone, but we should always be careful with the altitude and plan accordingly, such as taking medication for altitude sickness.

8Where are the Chinancocha & Orconcocha Lagoons located?

9WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING?

    1. Warm hat, buff, and sun hat.
    2. Sunglasses.
    3. Wool gloves (you can buy them in Huaraz for S/. 10.00).
    4. Sunscreen and lip balm.
    5. Trekking pants, long-sleeved synthetic shirts (not cotton), windbreaker, and an extra jacket for the cold.
    6. High-top trekking boots resistant to water and rough terrain.
    7. Camera.
    8. Altitude sickness pills and coca leaves.
    9. Extra food (cookies, chocolate, fruit, etc.).
    10. Bring your ID or passport.

10WHAT SHOULD I NOT DO IN THE LLANGANUCO, CHINANCOCHA & ORCONCOCHA LAGOONS?

    1. Don’t leave trash on the trail, especially since it damages the habitat of Huascarán National Park.
    2. Stay away from the group to avoid unnecessary delays.
    3. For example, picking any plants in Huascarán National Park.
    4. Don’t bring pets.

    11What to bring?

Comfortable, warm clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat or cap, a backpack or bag to carry your belongings, water (preferably in a reusable bottle), and cash to buy food along the way or at the lagoon and for boat rides.

It was our first adventure in Huaraz, and from that day on, we knew it had been a good choice. The long bus ride was more than compensated for by the incredible scenery we arrived at. The bus drops you off almost at the edge of the lagoon, so the surprise is almost immediate. The photos speak for themselves.

    12RECOMMENDATIONS

    1. Stay in Huaraz to acclimatize your body to the altitude the day before the tour.
    2. Hydration and rest are important the day before your departure.
    3. Drinking coca tea will help with altitude sickness.
    4. Wear good shoes for your trek to avoid foot injuries.
    5. Pack only what you need in your backpack.
    6. Your walking pace to the viewpoint is important; walk slowly and steadily to control your breathing.
    7. Eat chocolate during the trek; it will be converted into energy (glycogen) that will help you.
    8. We strongly recommend keeping your trash in your backpack and disposing of it in the bins upon your return.
